My desire to hike through the landscape was considerably curtailed by the heat, and these signs. Mijn drang om door het landschap te wandelen werd gekortwiekt door de hitte, en deze bordjes.
Added to this was proof of their presence, though fortunately this one was not very dangerous anymore. Voeg daarbij nog hard bewijs van hun aanwezigheid, hoewel deze (gelukkig) al onschadelijk was gemaakt.
The Badlands show some amazing geological features, and in this case, "show, don't tell" is probably the best strategy. Find your friendly neighbourhood geologist to explain what happened to create this amazing landscape. S/he will know, this is textbook erosion. De Badlands zijn een geweldig geologisch fenomeen, en ik denk dat ik in dit geval liever het woord aan de foto's laat. From Mitchell, SD to Interior, SD is by my newly discovered standards for driving a small stretch, but still over 200 miles. But how could I leave Mitchell without visiting the Corn Palace? When I was first told about this, I thought my friends were pulling my leg. But this is America, and stranger things have been done than decorating buildings with ears of corn. A true piece of Americana. Vanuit Mitchell naar Interior, beide in South Dakota, is het volgens mijn nieuwe normen voor autorijden een klein ritje, maar toch nog meer dan 200 mijl. Maar hoe kon ik Mitchell verlaten zonder het Maïspaleis te zien? Toen mijn vrienden me eerst vertelden over het bestaan van dit ding dacht ik dat ze me iets op de mouw speldden. Maar dit is Amerika, en ze hebben hier al vreemdere dingen gedaan dan gebouwen versieren met maïskolven. En je hebt de I-90 niet gedaan als je dit niet gezien hebt.
Local shops of the day: Corner Store Coffee House and Deli in Mitchell, for great coffee and oatmeal; Indulge Bistro and Bakery in Chamberlain, for a great lunch time sandwich and a sublime lemon bar slice; and the Wagon Wheel in Interior for a buffalo burger (yes, made with 100% real buffalo). In Kadoka I went off the I-90 and took the scenic approach to the new location for the mobile writing hut. In Kadoka ging ik van de grote snelweg, en nam de kleinere, mooiere baan naar de nieuwe locatie voor de mobiele schrijvershut.
The scenes along the way were just a taste of what was to come... De uitzichten erheen waren maar een voorproevertje van wat er de dag nadien zou komen...
I've arrived safely in Interior, SD, at the eastern end of the Badlands. I would love to show you pictures of all I've seen today, but the internet connection here is not powerful enough to cope with that... Hopefully better luck tomorrow.
Ik ben veilig aangekomen in Interior, South Dakota, aan de oostkant van de Badlands. Ik zou jullie met plezier allerlei foto's tonen van de mooie dingen die ik vandaag zag, maar de internetverbinding is daar niet krachtig genoeg voor. Hopelijk meer geluk morgen.

It's a long drive to Mitchell, SD.Just shy of 400 miles I clocked up, but that included some detours. I stopped for lunch in Albert Lea, MN, where I thought I'd help out the local economy rather than spend more money on terrible food that goes to the big corporations. We all remember the moral of the story in Cars, don't we? Het is een lange rit naar Mitchell, South Dakota. Net geen 400 mijl voor de dag, maar dat is inclusief een paar ommewegjes. Ik was rond de middag bij Albert Lea, Minnesota,en besloot om de lokale economie te steunen en mijn centjes niet uit te geven aan het minderwaardige eten dat je vlak bij de snelweg kan kopen, van de grote fastfood ketens. We weten allemaal nog hoe het stadje in Cars in zo'n treurige toestand beland was niet?
With the assistance of Yelp.com, I found 112 On Broadway, a nice diner that served tasty sandwiches, and more. (I don't know why this pic is sideways, but that Openface BLT with mozarella and much else was great!) Met de hulp van Yelp.com vond ik 112 On Broadway, een leuke plek waar ze lekker eten hebben, zoals deze sandwich (Ik weet niet waarom deze foto op zijn zij staat maar dat verandert niets aan de smaak van deze heerlijke open BLT (spek, sla en tomaat) sandwich met mozarella en nog vannalles.)

Sioux Falls, SD was also very nice, but I did not spend much time there, because I wanted to press on to Mitchell. I want to give a shout-out to the friendly folks at the Great Outdoors Store there. I needed a mat and some bits and bobs to supplement my camping kit and they have lots of choice and knowledgeable staff, and again choosing local ;-). Sioux Falls, South Dakota was ook heel leuk, maar ik was er niet lang. Ik wou immers tegen de avond in de buurt van Mitchell zijn. Ik wil wel even de fijne mensen van de Great Outdoors Store daar bedanken. Ik had nog een matje en wat klein kampeergerei nodig, en zij konden me helpen: medewerkers die weten waar ze het over hebben, een uitgebreid assortiment, en opnieuw: geen keten, maar een onafhankelijke winkel ;-).
I also took a very brief detour to try and capture something of the landscape, but it is very hard to give a sense of the expanse of the sky and the corn and soy fields. Ik ben ook even van de grote baan afgeweken om te proberen dat weidse landschap en lucht met de camera te vatten, maar dat is niet eenvoudig.
Tomorrow: Corn Palace, and driving to the Badlands. First: a rest. Morgen: Maïspaleis, en rijden tot de Badlands. Maar eerst even uitrusten.
