3 weken – laatste lange afstand

Nu of nooit dus.

Nee??

3 weeks – the last long run!

Still accepting donations!! Have you donated yet? Why not? Go on then, I’ll wait for you here!

A short update about last week’s training. I wanna go to bed!😅 This past week was really the one where I started to notice the feeling creeping in that it’s all taking a jolly long time to get there. It’s all a mental game, but we’re nearly there!

Interval training on Wednesday. After a short warm up, 2 min fast followed by 2 mins slower, repeated 5 times total. Weird to have such a light session, but in hindsight I realised why: there was a big run coming later in the week. So I’m not complaining!

Tempo training on Friday should have been 8 miles, it was 6 and a bit (just shy of 10k) due to lack of time. At least the speed and effort were in the right ball park.

The pièce de resistance (heck, a whole furniture shop worth of irresistible pieces) was Sunday’s long run – a 20 miler. Last chance for such a distance before the race: three weeks out is when the window begins to close on the benefits from a training session; closer than that and you risk not recovering fully in time from the physical demands on your body. Now or never, so off I went. It didn’t feel as good as two weeks ago, but I did do all 20 miles. You can come up with amazing stories to tell yourself about why you should or shouldn’t continue when you’re already fed up before you’re halfway. I didn’t really like how my heart rate went up early on, but nothing else was physically wrong so I just plodded on and counted down mile by mile. It’s a very good exercise for the marathon itself, when you start to wonder what you’re doing there or why. And no, I have no idea why it felt like this but every now and then you just get a run that doesn’t work and you just have to get through it. On to the next week! And remember to donate!

Was that enough? Can I be done now?
