It was time again for the annual conference of the Association of Asian Studies, and this time Washington DC was the place to be. I am fortunate enough to live within driving distance, so I went down to catch up with friends and colleagues. I had a very productive conference! Not only did I get feedback on some ideas, got officially on board for a new project (more later), and caught up with the news of many friends who are spread out all over the globe now, but I also finished a pair of socks! See... If you bring your knitting, your meetings are always productive.
Het was weer tijd voor de jaarlijkse conferentie van de Association of Asian Studies, en dit keer kwamen we samen in Washington DC. Gelukkig woon ik niet te ver en kan ik snel met de auto er heen, om met vrienden en collega's bij te praten. Het was een heel productieve conferentie voor mij! Niet alleen kreeg ik tips voor dingen waar ik nu mee bezig ben, heb ik officieel toegezegd voor een nieuw project (meer daarover later), en kon ik vele vrienden van over de hele wereld weerzien, maar ik heb ook een paar sokken klaar! Als je je breiwerk naar vergaderingen brengt, zijn die altijd productief.

After returning home, I also found a chance to darn some of my socks. Little holes where the big toe pokes through need to be fixed before the entire sock goes. The other method of darning is apparently to hold the socks over the bin and say "Darn it!" while dropping them in the bin. If that's your preferred option, more power to you, but please own up to your privilege: clearly you have more time than I do! It takes me a week to knit a pair if I don't have to do much else, but it took me only thirty minutes to find my supplies and darn three holes, and have two pairs of socks ready for service again! The pictures are my oldest socks, from 2008. Indestructible Regia, although I no longer have the original yarn to darn. Leftovers always come in handy.
Toen ik terug thuis kwam vond ik ook een gaatje om de gaatjes in mijn sokken te stoppen. Als de grote teen door de sok heen komt kijken kan je die best stoppen, of de hele sok gaat er aan voor je het weet. (De andere methode werkt alleen goed in het Engels, vrees ik.) In elk geval, dit was sneller dan nieuwe breien (dat duurt een week als ik niet veel anders te doen heb). Binnen het halfuur had ik mijn materiaal bij de hand, en drie gaatjes in twee paar sokken gestopt, dus twee paar weer klaar voor dienst! De foto's zijn van mijn oudste sokken, uit 2008. Onverwoestbare Regia, maar het originele garen heb ik niet meer. Restjes zijn altijd nuttig!
